The first time that I heard about "butoh" is
秦Kanoko黃蝶南天舞踏團, introduced by a friend in 2006 when I was in Taiwan which impressed me very much. At that time, a group of people were having
a serious of protests to against an urban regeneration policy made by local government, in order to reserve a Leprocy hospital (樂生療養院) so that to protect leporcy patiences who have been lived in hospital for their whole life.
秦Kanoko, a butoh dancer from Japan, played her work <<Beauty of Nature>> during the period of protest, as being a way to encourage both advocasts and patiencs which would be regarded as a form of performing art involved into social event, also add in a certain level of significant meaning to this dance, and also left me a strong impression in mind.
Leprocy is a illness which brings people scared. The way of Kanoko present her butoh is kind of scarrying as well, which made a perfect match with this social activity at that time.
Today, I saw the introduction of
Sankai Juki's butoh from Sadler's Well, not only reminds me of this memory but also makes me want to know this distictive way of dancing more.
